Attack of April

Slightly over six hours left in this wretched month. If it weren't for Noah's birthday, I'd sign up for a medically induced coma for the month of April.

My poor hubby has strep. Who gets strep when it's 80 degrees outside??? People who know me in April, that's who!!

And then there's the cat. (Kat might want to skip this part.) My poor cat has an ear hematoma. Basically his paper thin ear just keeps filling up with blood. It's horrible. We've had 2 drain tubes put in and nothing is working. His poor ear is all deformed now.

I think I may just hide under the covers for the next six hours or so.

My mom sent me an interesting email on the origins of "mayday" and now I can't find it. Evil evil April stole it.

See you tomorrow when I'll be in a vastly better mood (assuming that a meteor doesn't land on my car in the next few hours, the washing machine doesn't start eating the dryer, the other cat finally gives in and comes out as a dog, and sparks start shooting out of my head).

The Queen

Watched a fantastic movie today called "The Queen." It's stars Helen Mirren (who won the Best Actress Oscar - deservedly) as Queen Elizabeth II. The movie tells the story of the week that Princess Diana died. The acting in the movie is just amazing. You really start believing that you're watching the real people involved. The story itself is just mesmerizing. It's so interesting to see how there was such a clash between the traditional Queen and modern Prime Minister. At first the Queen seems so cold and distant - it's so obvious that the Royal Family disliked Diana. But her primary struggle is so internal. She wants to stick by the old traditions and protocols, but the situation demanded something different. The whole concept of a monarchy and royalty seems so strange when you're from this country. The whole family seems so stiff and formal - almost trapped by their traditions. But you also do get the feeling that the Queen cares for her family (especially her grandsons) and her country. It's difficult to fault her behavior when she really knows no other way to behave. At one point she says something like, "Country first, self second." She truly believes this and has LIVED it her entire life. Not many people can say that. This is a movie that I am going to buy. I highly recommend it.

P.S. Prince Phillip comes off looking like a class A jerk. I did some reading about him and he does seem woefully out of touch and snooty. He weirdly insists on taking Diana's sons hunting every day. Maybe it's a British thing, but I can't imagine taking children hunting when their mother just died. What strange, strange lives these people lead.

A new recipe

Here's a new recipe for you. This is a lot of work, but absolutely divine. Credit to my mom for finding this one.

Garlic Chicken

Ingredients:
1 or 2 heads of garlic (these are HEADS, not cloves - use as much or as little as you like)
2 cans chicken broth
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
6 tbsp butter - separated in half
3 tbsp flour
1/4 cup dry white wine
1 large lemon, peeled, seeded, and sliced

Directions:
Separate garlic cloves.
Simmer garlic in water for 15 minutes in a small pot
Drain water and remove peels from garlic - do not crush garlic!
Put all cloves back into pot with the broth and simmer for 45 minutes
In a large REGULAR skillet (not teflon), melt butter over medium heat
Chicken can either be cut into bite size pieces or left whole
Salt and pepper chicken to taste and brown thoroughly in skillet - does not have to be cooked through, just well browned.
When chicken is done, remove to a medium casserole dish
Preheat oven to 350
When garlic is done simmering, remove from pot with slotted spoon to the casserole dish. Reserve the broth.
In the same skillet chicken was browned in, melt 3 tbsp butter and add the flour to make a roux
SLOWLY add the chicken broth. Let a little bit dribble in and incorporate it into the roux completely before adding more. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up all the browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
Slowly add the wine.
Put the chicken and garlic back into the skillet with the sliced lemon and let simmer for 10 minutes.
Put everything back into the casserole dish and bake, covered, for 45 minutes.
Serve alone or over pasta.

The sauce for this dish is amazing. We usually make sure to have a nice crusty bread with this to sop up every last bit.

Enjoy!!

March/April Blues

I don't have much luck in March and April. Bad months for me.

1993 - My son goes into the hospital with rotovirus, every appliance in my house broke down - VCR, fridge, washing machine, had to get the tie rods fixed on my car, and then it all culminated with my uncle dying.

2007 - My aunt dies, my dad gets very sick, my dad goes into the hospital, my cat's ear like blows up, and, as I type this, we are in the first tornado watch of the season.

Nine days left in this month - keep your fingers crossed for me that nothing else happens.

Here's a happy article for you:

I am now a fan of the Miss America pageant. Good for you lady.

Ash

I have this beautiful cousin (she's actually my cousin's daughter - has always been more like a niece to me) and today is her 18th birthday. She was almost born in my car. Only in my family would it seem normal to send a pregnant (and overdue) 19 year old off on a road trip with her 16 year old cousin (me) to see why the baby was late. We got about 1/2 hour out of town and things started happening. I never drove so fast in my life getting her back (this is in the middle of NOWHERE). I'm lucky I didn't kill all of us with my driving. About every 2 miles, my cousin would apologize in advance in case her water broke on my seats. I would just yell at her to shut up and breathe. Of course we were so young and stupid we had no idea that first babies take a LONG time to be born. Ashton wasn't born until two days later.

Ashton is a beautiful, smart, funny, loving young woman. She's always had a very special place in my heart (especially since I'll never have a daughter). I'd put a picture up, but I don't know how she'd feel about that. I wish her all the best and all my love. Happy Birthday Ashton, I love you.

I changed my mind....

....just go ahead and fire the wimp. "Imus said he wouldn't resign but said his critics had the right to call for his firing." Now he DOES deserve to be fired. It's bad enough that these morons make these ridiculous comments - but it's just as bad that they then go on every show in the world to say how sorry they are. No they're not. They're sorry they made equine butts of themselves and got caught. Now they're just doing damage control.

Still haven't gotten my pics off my camera. Check back tomorrow! :)

4.08.2007

Uh-oh in the morning

Since it's a holiday I thought I'd blog about stupidity and hate. That's always fun.

Imus, Imus, Imus - what were you thinking man? I've never been a fan of his. I always found him a little bit boring and his over-the-topic antics just seemed like someone trying too hard. I'm sure anyone who is on the net at all has read about his remarks about the Rutgers women's BB team. I think what he said was really insulting and unbelievably idiotic. BUT....all of these calls to fire him and "punish" him I think are kind of silly. The same goes for Mel Gibson, Michael Richards, and the Dixie Chicks (I just have to interject here to say that I once saw this very funny comedian who said that he was going to start an all-boy country group and call them the Chixie Dicks - ahahahhaha). Anyway, all of these activists and groups need to quit demanding that something "be done" about people who make remarks they don't like. The interesting thing to me is that with the Dixie Chicks it WAS done. The constituency that didn't like what they said quit buying the records, quit buying the tickets, and made it very clear to the radio stations that they didn't want to hear them on the air or they would quit listening (of course the twits in the entertainment industry had to do a pitiful retaliation by giving them a ton of Grammys - that no one cares about anyway). That's what should be done with Imus. Don't buy the products from advertisers on his show - or anything from the stations involved. Once it hits the pocketbook, someone will do something. It's funny to me that when the Dixie Chicks were boycotted the entire left screeched about the Dixie Chicks' free speech being violated. It WAS NOT. They were perfectly free to say whatever they wanted and the consumers were perfectly free to respond in a manner that they felt was appropriate. NBC shouldn't have to fire Imus for what he said (the certainly CAN if they want to, but they aren't REQUIRED to). If the public is upset enough about it they will let NBC know and they will act accordingly - just like with the Dixie Chicks. I wonder if the left will screech about Imus' rights being violated then? I doubt it - only the left gets to say any nasty thing it wants to without repercussions. Did anyone freak out when Harry Belafonte called the African-Americans in Bush's cabinet Uncle Toms? Did Al Sharpton call for him to be punished and threaten to picket until something was done? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. That's another topic though. It's just such a crybaby attitude - "oh please go do something about this big bully that called us names." YOU go do something. Why do I even have to say this? Didn't we first learn this lesson with the Montgomery bus boycotts? Instead of whining to the government to save you from the big meanies, be proactive, be a smart consumer, let the market take care of the problem.

'Nuff of that. The holiday was great for us. It's so nice to be at my mom and dad's place. We all had a great time and ate a ton of good food. Noah got to have his second birthday celebration. He got cowboy boots, a hat, cap guns (liberal freak out alert), and a badge. I'll post a picture as soon as I get them off my camera. Hope everyone else reading this had a happy weekend.

Strange news, good news, and really weird views.

Strange news first.

I am now re-thinking my wish to be cremated - because I don't want to be snorted or pressed into a diamond. Well the diamond thing isn't so bad - but when I mentioned it to Dylan, he said, "Yeah, then I can sell you on Ebay." No respect from that kid. Note to the world - it's pine box for me all the way. (Shot into space like Scotty might be ok though.)

I guess the name Bachman-Turner-Overdrive was taken. Probably a good thing. I think parents should legally be able to name their kids anything they want to, but maybe the Swedish government showing some sense is ok too.

Good news

Apparently the nursing programs in this state are doing a great job. Way to go!

Ok - Weird Views.

I haven't blogged much about my husband, Jeff. I don't know why. I would certainly never gripe or complain about him on here - that's just rude. And honestly, he's a great guy so there isn't much griping and complaining to do. And while *I* think he's cute, a picture of him with a pull-up on his head would just be freaky. He's smart, funny, talented, and just really a good person. I probably don't deserve him. I'm sure he puts up with a lot of really obnoxious things from me, but we won't go there. Just to brag, he really is very talented. Here's proof:

The first two are oil and the last is ink. As you can see, he's really into to comic art. This is where we get the really weird views.

We own the new version of Superman. I blogged about it before. I liked it. I like most of the Superman movies and stories. Anyway, in the new movie there is a scene where a bad guy shoots a pistol at Superman. The bullet hits his eye in slow-motion and the bullet just pancakes and drops to the ground. Stay with me - it gets really complicated now. So my husband says that in the first Superman movie, as well as the comic books, Superman's father, Jor-El (I can't believe I know that), explains that Superman's molecular structures is many times more dense than that of humans. My husband argues that if Superman is so molecularly dense that a bullet pancakes upon hitting his eye, then he would just destroy the earth. He would be like a giant sucking black hole killing everyone and everything. At the very least, he would destroy everything he touched, leave giant craters wherever he walked, kill anyone he merely laid a finger on, crush anything he tried to sit on, or, when taking off to fly, send the Earth spinning wildly out of control. Furthermore, if Superman has all this fantastic collective Kryptonic knowledge of physics, science, etc., passed on to him by his father, why is it that the best thing he could think of to be on Earth is a newspaper reporter - and not even the best one.

For some INSANE reason, I tried to join into this discussion with the theory that maybe Superman never really "touches" anything. He can fly - maybe it's just superbly controlled hovering. And maybe the bumbling reporter is just a cover. Jeff quickly countered with A) if he's that molecularly dense he would be so heavy and have such a huge mass that he would be, in effect, a black hole destroying everything in it's path, despite any hovering and B) why does he even need a cover? and why not a better one? At least work for the BBC or some international news agency.

Keep in mind that I'm already cracking up laughing at the tone of indignity that Jeff is taking about this whole issue - like any of it matters. But the absolute funniest, gut-busting, screamingly funny thing he said was this: And if Superman is so great, why is his arch-enemy just a normal bald guy?

I don't know, honey, you tell me!

Guest Blogging - Sioux Lady

Below is a piece written by Sioux Lady. Anyone who wants to "guest blog" on here - just let me know. Being the control freak that I am, I will OF COURSE vet the piece first, but what the heck - it is MY blog! Enjoy.

A PERFECT DIAL “M” FOR MURDER

The similarities and differences between Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 “Dial M for Murder” and Andrew Davis’s 1998 remake “A Perfect Murder” tell us more about cultural changes that have occurred in the last 44 years than they do about the movie-making skills of either.

They movies have the same plot line. A money-desperate husband plots the murder of his beautiful, elegant, heiress wife who he knows has taken a lover and will leave him. He hires/blackmails someone else to do the “wet work.” He leaves her apartment key in a hidden place and shows the killer how that will guarantee his easy access. The killer is to make the killing look like a robbery gone wrong. The husband arranges to be surrounded by others miles from home while the deed is being done, but calls home at just the right time to place his wife in the “kill zone.” The husband hears the murder attempt taking place over the open line. However, the wife kills the killer. The husband makes a key blunder which eventually proves he is guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.

Some plot differences: Hitchcock’s movie is set in London; Davis’s in New York. In “Dial M,” the hired killer is an old Oxford schoolmate of the husband who is a complete stranger to the wife. He was a petty thief at school and, using an alias, has become much worse since – mostly bilking lonely women. In “Perfect,” the hired killer, using an alias, is the wife’s lover. He was a juvenile delinquent and has served time in prison as an adult where he developed an innate artistic talent. He, too, has spent his time since bilking lonely widows and is currently wanted for theft of bearer bonds. The wife does not know of his past and is helping to promote his artistic talent. In both cases, the husband uses the threat of exposure and the payment of a lot of money to get the killer to do the deed.

In “Dial M,” the husband finds a letter from the lover to the wife and mails her anonymous blackmail threats. The wife shares these letters with her lover. In “Perfect,” the husband sets detectives on the lover to learn of his past and on his wife to get pictures of her liaisons. The husband also writes a phony blackmail letter, but doesn’t send it. Both husbands contrive to have the killers pick up dropped envelops containing the love letter in “Dial M” and the blackmail letter and pictures in “Perfect” to place their fingerprints thereupon and use this as part of the threat. In both movies, the husband has the killer in the apartment in order to demonstrate how the murder is to be done. In “Perfect,” however, this requires the husband and lover/killer to meet twice; once when the proposition/threat is made at the lover/killer’s apartment and, again, at the husband’s apartment. This is important to the plot because it gives the lover/killer an opportunity to tape record the husband’s killing directions.

The most important plot difference between the two movies is that, in “Dial M,” the wife, after killing the killer, picks up the phone and finds her husband on the line. In a state of shock, she he tells him what happened. He tells her not to touch anything or call the police and rushes home. After sending her to lie down in the bedroom, he re-arranges the evidence to incriminate her. He places the love letter in the dead killer’s pocket, takes the apartment key out of the killer’s pocket and places it back in his wife’s purse, burns in the fireplace the scarf the killer had tried to use to strangle the wife and replaces it with her stockings to make it look like she planted them there after using them to make “strangle” marks on her neck. He is successful in all of this and she is tried, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a blackmailer.

In “Perfect,” the husband arrives home before the police. He goes first to “console” his blood-soaked wife and finds the blood trail back to the kitchen where the killer lies dead with a ski-mask on. He only has time to take her apartment key out of the dead man’s pocket and put it back on her key ring and make scratches on the back door faking a forced entry before the police arrive. Imagine his surprise when the ski-mask is removed and the dead man is not the lover, but a complete stranger the lover hired to do the “wet work.”

The cultural differences between the two movies are immense. First, as to violence. In “Dial M,” while we see the killer try to strangle the wife and her use a scissors to stab him in the back – not one drop of blood is shown. The killer falls backwards on to the scissors which drives it in deep enough to kill him. The place where the killer fell is covered by an area rug in later scenes. That is all the violence there is in the whole movie. In “Perfect,” we see the killer try to murder the wife and her use a handy meat thermometer to stab him in the throat. Blood squirts. There is blood smeared everywhere and one great pool of it. This movie has two more violent scenes.

Language. There is not a “hell” or a “damn” in the whole of “Dial M.” “Perfect” is littered with the “f” word among others.

Sex. In “Dial M,” the husband and wife exchange hello and goodbye spousal kisses. The lover barely touches the wife and the only way we know of any sex between them is because the husband tells the killer he followed them once to the lover’s apartment where they were making spaghetti together. Unless “making spaghetti” was some fifties euphemism for going at it hot and heavy, that is as much “sex” as there is. In “Perfect,” torrid bed scenes and passionate embraces between the wife and lover leave nothing to the imagination – darn it!

The most interesting cultural difference, however, is the difference between the role of the men and women in the two movies particularly that of the two detectives and the two leading ladies. (The role of the lover in “Dial M” is not important. He believes his lover to be innocent and, being a writer of mystery novels, realizes what must have happened, but he cannot prove it.) In “Dial M,” the Scotland Yard detective is the hero of the story. Learning of some odd behavior on the part of the husband after the wife’s conviction, he realizes that something “smells.” With further investigation, he figures out what really happened, entraps the husband, saves the hapless, dazed and confused wife from the gallows and delivers her into the arms of her lover.

In “Perfect,” while the detective believes there is something wrong with the scenario that the killer was robbing the apartment when surprised by the wife who he then tries to kill, he has not the least idea of what really happened. It is the wife who figures it out. She is not just a housewife like the fifties “Dial M” wife, but a high-powered – at least tri-lingual – career woman who works as an assistant to a United Nations ambassador. After the attack she had been as hapless, dazed and confused as the “Dial M” wife, but after a time she gets over it, attempts to contact her lover, gets on with her plan to leave her husband and moves out. She is suspicious that he might have been behind the attack and uses her high-level contacts to have his finances investigated. She learns that he is in deep financial trouble. When she confronts her husband, he shows her proof of her lover’s past and his “proof” of her lover’s attempt at blackmail. She accepts it all as factual, apologizes to him and moves back in. The husband kills the lover who attempts to blackmail him with the recording he had made. The lover – who did really love the wife – had sent her a copy of the recording, but the husband intercepts it and puts it in a safe in the apartment.

“Perfect” does not quite make clear what re-arouses the wife’s suspicions, but, becoming so, she figures out the combination to the safe, finds the recording, and locates the key piece of evidence. Instead of calling the police, she taunts the husband into trying to kill her. Once he strikes her and she has proof of his second attempt, she pulls a gun and shoots him dead in self-defense. When the detective arrives he listens to the recording and gazes at the wife in awe. I did, too!

How did “Dial M” end? The detective first clears the wife using the key piece of evidence; then uses it to entrap the husband. The four main characters are now all in the apartment together. The husband makes a half-hearted attempt to flee, but when he finds the exits guarded, he goes to the bar to pour himself a drink. He cordially asks his wife and lover if they would like one. They graciously accept. The camera pans to the detective who takes a comb from his pocket to smooth his “veddy” English moustache as he smiles in smug self-satisfaction. How civilized!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to figure out which of the movies I prefer.

A Big 4 Kid

Today my little baby turns 4. He's been going on and on about being "a big 4 kid" now. This little guy is such a joy. His older brother made me learn to be a grown up, but Noah has sure made me learn to enjoy it. It's funny to me how different my two boys are. Noah is much much much more mercurial than his brother. But he's funny, and whip-smart, stubborn, cute, wild, naughty, and nice all rolled into one. He is also very very very much a daddy's boy. But that's ok with me - a) it's something that every boy should have and b) when he wakes up at 2 in the morning, he doesn't want me!!! You never think when you love one kid so much that you could ever love another, but amazingly, your heart just grows and grows to make room. I can't imagine a world without Noah. Happy Birthday my love.

Been a while....

I know it's been a while, but it's been a really hectic past few days - and next week is going to be just as busy. I only wanted to stop in and post this clip for you. I hope you like this. I think it's a riot. I hope to get back to my quasi-regular blogging late next week.

Newsalypto

Flu update - Noah is back to 100%. Also, he hit a potty training milestone last night that is a little to gross to discuss in public, but off in the hazy distance I now see a future without Pull-Ups. Whoopee!

On to the news:

A small quiz:

Define asinine:
A. Mayans use a purification ritual to drive away bad spirits left by President Bush.
B. Hillary's re-rant about that vast, right-wing conspiracy.
C. Both

Maybe Mel Gibson can make a new Mayan movie, "Conspiralypto: The Vast Right Wing."

Catalypto: Stray cats attack people. (Note that "cats" is not capitalized - this story does not refer to Brian Setzer and his bandmates running amok.) I may have to be nicer to Sinatra and Twister - they may turn on me yet.

Pizzalypto: It may be time to dig up that old phrase "conspicuous consumption." $1000 for a pizza? Madness. For that price the pizza better wash its own dish when you're done.

Globalypto: How to solve global warming (or Richard Branson just has way too much money).

Myocardioinfarctalypto (ok - I'm stretching this waaaaay to thin). Don't have a heart attack on weekends. You'll die. Because of the vast right-wing, no doubt.

The Unicorn did it!!!! Mythobeastalypto!!!!

F L U

So now my little boy has Influenza A and strep throat. The poor kid is a wreck. I HATE when little kids are sick. They feel so bad and they don't know why. I would give anything to be able to take all his sickness and have it be me who feels bad. He's being such a trooper and so brave. He can always manage a smile, a kiss, and a hug - even when he feels bad. I love that kid so much it just hurts. Luckily I have a wonderful mother who is going to come down on Monday to stay with him so we don't have to miss a bunch of work. THIS is why we moved back to this state. My mom is so great.

Now on to a big rant.

Apparently, no insurance company will pay for Tamiflu, the anti-viral medication. The doctor prescribed it for my son and for everyone else in the household. It's not a cure, but it can ease symptoms and help prevent others in the house from getting the flu. It make absolutely no sense to me that insurance will not pay for this. They consider it "optional" treatment. But wouldn't it be better for the rest of us NOT to get the flu? Wouldn't it cost the insurance companies (and our employers) MORE money if we all get really sick?!?!?!!??!?! Senseless. But since we're dealing with an industry that sees no problem paying for Viagra, yet balked for years at paying for birth control - I guess we're not dealing with any kind of logical thinking. The insurance won't even pay for the Tamiflu for Noah and HE ACTUALLY HAS THE FLU. Dumb. This stuff costs $78 for each person. So $78 x 4 people in my family = $312. Nice.

Send your best wishes to the little guy.

Tasina Appleseed...or how I learned to hug a tree

Oh the things we do for love. I got into a mostly joking argument with a dear relative about the environment. I have pledged to plant a tree in her honor when she is no longer with us. And not just plant the thing, but take care of it, and even replace it if it dies. (It's hard to grow trees in Siberia...er....South Dakota.) I draw the line at talking to the damn thing, although I may offer a word or two to her as I lovingly tend to my new plant.

But let's get one thing straight - I don't HATE the environment. It's environmentalists I have a problem with. Especially nutty, tree-hugging, people-hating, hypocritical, mis-informed, dogmatic environmentalists. Mr. Gore and his ilk present their argument as incontrovertible fact, when the FACT is they are presenting an argument. And any argument has at least two sides. I've had all the green propaganda and like any thinking, rational creature should do, I went out and looked for some other viewpoints. I'm not a scientist - I don't just *know* these things. I read "Trashing the Planet" by Dixie Lee Ray, I read "In A Dark Wood" by the guy that wrote it (can't think of the name right now), I've researched the issue (goodness, I'm starting to sound like Tom Cruise on a rant against psychiatry). But the truth is the tree people are being glib.

Global warming is NOT a fact. It's a theory...and not even a very well-built theory at that. Should a person CHOOSE to subscribe to that theory - fine. But don't make ME subscribe to it. Don't make me switch all my light bulbs to low-wattage just because YOU think I should. (I read an article on this very proposal in California recently but don't have the link handy.) I've seen the argument for global warming and I've seen the argument against. In MY mind, I find the latter to be more credible. Does this mean I burn tires in my backyard? Drop diapers out of car windows? Leave all my lights burning madly day and night? Of course not. Nor would I recommend that anyone do so. More importantly, I'm not trying to legislate my beliefs onto anyone else.

Anyway, I've spent way more time on this topic than I ever planned. Honestly, I find it all kind of boring and unimportant in the grander scheme of things. Beyond a few humorous jabs at the tree people, there's nothing much about environmentalism that interests me at all. 'Nuff said!

I was going to put up another recipe, but all my shows are coming on. Ha! I'll try to get one up tomorrow.

Peace, love, and greenhouse gases to you all! :)

Some News

We've been dealing with an almost 4 year old with a stomach virus. I'm sure you can imagine how things have been. I wouldn't recommend this as a punishment for the worst criminal. It's a good thing he's cute or we'd never put up with this!!! One cute thing Noah does - when he's about to get sick he says, "I'm freaking out!!!" I have no idea where he picked this up. Even if he sees/hears one of the cats getting sick he yells, "Mom! Twister's freaking out!!!" So next time you hear someone say that they're freaking out, you might want to take a couple steps back - just to be safe! :)

Anyway, here a few short blurbs:

I am not a dog lover, but I think doing this is mean.

Of course if there are going to be naked gyms, you'd get these two goofs - not the buff hot guys (there's no nudity in the link - you're safe to click).

Great - another thing to fret about when I'm getting ready in the morning. Brushing my teeth may give me a seizure. I'm sure dentists around the world are thrilled about this story.

Another recipe

Since the post I just did was so boring, here's another recipe. Also, I can make things other than Italian, but I really like these. Maybe next time I'll put up a different kind. I got this recipe from All-Recipes. It's a great site. This is a wonderful, simple, fresh-tasting pasta sauce. Very light and spring-like.

Ingredients
1 lb Roma tomatoes blanched, peeled, seeded, and chopped (or cheat like I do and buy a can of petite diced)
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
4 stalks green onion, chopped
1 small jar of marinated artichoke hearts
Salt and pepper to taste.

After chopping all the vegetables (I usually chop the artichoke hearts too - this is an incredibly messy procedure), saute them over medium heat until soft. I drizzle the pan with olive oil and probably about 2-3 tablespoons of the marinade from the artichoke hearts. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve over your favorite pasta and garnish with cheese.

This is a very simple but extraordinarily tasty sauce. We almost never use any other kind of sauce on our pasta. The fresh tomatoes are the best, but canned work fine if you don't want to go through all the work of blanching, peeling, etc. We usually serve this over cheese ravioli with a nice Italian sausage. There's a brand we can find here that has mozzarella and artichoke mixed in the sausage. This sauce can also be chilled and makes a wonderful salad dressing. Unlike my other recipes, I really would NOT recommend making changes to this (other than the canned tomato thing). It's very simple, but the flavors just seem to meld so perfectly. I'm a big fan of experimenting with wine, balsamic vinegar, spices, etc., but sometimes it's best to just enjoy something simple and good.

I hate winter

I'm just going to complain and whine and ramble aimlessly around in this post so feel free to skip it.

This weekend and the last were the ONLY two weekends I had any plans this entire winter. So of course we had blizzards both times. Ugh. Someone come back to this site in mid-June and remind me why I moved to South Dakota. (It's because mid-June in St. Louis is kind of like living on the sun - but with 100% humidity.)

I really have nothing else to say. I've been playing over at MySpace quite a bit. I've also been looking for new templates for this blog. Can't really find anything a) that I like or b) is easy to upload. I think I've been to every blog template site in the known universe. I found one really nice one, but it pushed the columns all the way over to the left side and I didn't like that at all. I'm sure there's a way to fix that problem, but it seems to complicated and not really worth the effort. For those of you who are kind enough to offer free blog templates, can I offer you one suggestion? Please make your sites easier to search. I'm sure there are lots of templates I would love, but I don't want to page through 16,000 thumbnails to find them.

I'm hoping we can get out of town tomorrow. The storm is over, but there is apparently no plan in this ENTIRE STATE for snow removal. This is city is the worst place I've ever seen for the lack of snow removal. We had a decent day where everything was getting slushy and they did nothing. Why not scrape the streets down? Because then later that night it snowed again so we had fresh snow on top of rutted, lumpy, re-frozen slush. It certainly makes driving an adventure. I'm sure it's REALLY awful for my husband - I am not a fun passenger. I'm given to gasps and winces and obnoxious (and obvious) suggestions. The dear, sweet man must go through an enormous amount of self-restraint to not slap me silly.

I just read a news story that there is going to be a TV show made about those cavemen from the Geico commercials. My mom will be so disappointed - she has a really weird love for that little gecko they use in the commercials. I even searched all over the internet for a little figurine of that thing to get her for her birthday. All I could find were stuffed animals and bobble-heads that looked nothing like the commercial character.

We just watched a great movie called "The Dancer Upstairs." It stars the ridiculously hot Javier Bardem and was directed by John Malkovich. It's a story about an honest detective in an unnamed Latin American country who is trying to find a communist terrorist. It's loosely based on the Shining Path movement in Peru. I really love the movie (not just for the terribly sexy Javier). Kind of a slow-paced, introspective film. Beautifully shot. Near the beginning of the movie there is an unexpectedly hilarious quip about cat lovers (spoken by the dreamy Mr. Bardem). The line is made more funny by the fact that it's not a comedy at all. If you can find this movie I highly recommend it.

Wow - I hope no one thinks I'm going to start stalking that actor.

This is the most boring post I've ever done - I apologize!!!

Carbon Neutral, But Chock Full O'Methane

So. I first saw the phrase "carbon neutral" in Michael Crichton's excellent book, "State of Fear." (I'd link to Amazon so you could purchase this book, but then thought that such an action might necessitate the killing of more trees - so just go to the library and get it instead.) I wasn't really sure what it meant, but it sounded tree-hugger-ish and like just another piece of PC BS propaganda so I just let it go. But then today I found this article accusing Al Gore of hypocrisy because of his lavish, energy wasting lifestyle. Turns out his family spends a whole bunch o' bucks on energy on their 10,000 square foot home. Good for them. Kill the trees, I say. Anyway, the Gores argue that since they are practicing all sorts of other energy saving do-gooder things, that they are living a carbon neutral lifestyle. Well that caused my ears to perk up and I did a little bit of research to find out just what carbon neutral really meant. Here and here are a couple of links for you. Basically, if you cause pollution by the consumption of fossil fuels, you can pay off your carbon debt by doing something good like planting a tree.

WHAT THE F***?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
This is the most self-serving, obnoxious piece of drivel that I have ever heard. So, Al Gore can circle the world 10 times in his jet-fuel guzzling jet just so long as he then installs some solar panels on his house. How incredibly illogical. Even if you believe the misguided assumption that burning fossil fuels hurts the ozone layer or causes ducks to have web-foot tumors or whatever, planting a freakin' tree isn't going to solve that problem. You can't repair stuff like that by planting a tree - even a whole forest of trees. The whole carbon neutral bullcrap (hey - crap is neutral, no?) is just an excuse for these stupid, self-absorbed, nosy, pushy, out-of-touch celebrities to waste alllllllll the energy they want to when they jet around the world, or blow up cars for movies, or spend a gazillion dollars on stupid stuff and still feel warm and fuzzy about themselves - AND - MOST IMPORTANTLY - tell the rest of us how to live OUR lives. What a complete joke.
By following their logic, I could go on a "calorie neutral" diet if I drink a Diet Coke for every bag of M&M's I wolf down. Or I could live a "tobacco neutral" diet if I go outside and suck up a bunch of fresh air for every puff I take on a cigarette. Maybe "narcotic neutral": do a big bag of cocaine and follow it up with some Quaaludes and a shot of tequila. Or how about a "virginity neutral" lifestyle? For every person you sleep with, you say no to the next person who asks then go home and masturbate. (My husband just came up with "felony neutral": for every person I stab to death with a Sharpie, I have to hand out candy and balloons at a cancer ward for kids the next day.) Or the best yet - a complete "logic neutral" lifestyle: for every inane, vapid, self-serving, PC, worthless idea that you come up with, you then have to spend 15 hours reading Ayn Rand - or studying Aristotle - or writing "I will not be an idiot" 500 times on a blackboard (and diagram that sentence after each time you write it). Un-freakin'-believable.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

16 years ago, at about exactly this time, I met the most wonderful person who changed my life completely. The first time I saw Dylan's beautiful face, I knew I would never be the same. I took one look at him and felt every emotion imaginable. I knew that my life was no longer only about me, but that I now had another human being to care for and to look out for and whose needs would always come before mine. I'm sure it was not ideal for him to have such a young and ill-prepared mother, but I think we came out ok. Dylan is smart, funny, generous, loving, kind, witty, talented, handsome, and unbelievable big-hearted. I didn't think it would be possible to love him more than I did at the first moment I saw him, but somehow every day I do. Now that he's a young man, I can see so much about him to admire. He's a much kinder and thoughtful person than I've ever been.

Dylan, I love you!!!!

Hello to Hollywood

It's Oscar night. Here are my picks for the major categories. (Because I don't really give a hoot about sound editing and it just makes the show way longer than it needs to be.)
Keep in mind that these are not the ones *I* want to win - these are the ones I think are going to win.

Best Picture - Babel
Best Director - Martin Scorsese (or however it's spelled) for The Departed
Best Actor - Forest Whitaker for The Last Kind of Scotland
Best Actress - Helen Mirren for The Queen
Best Supporting Actor - Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls
Best Animated Feature - Cars
Screenplay (Adapted) - Borat
Scrrenplay (Original) - Babel

I could be wrong.

Here's another recipe for a snowy winter day.

Chicken Alfredo With Broccoli

I'm going to do this in sections like I cook it.

3 tbsp olive oil - or whatever - drizzle it around the pan - however much that is.
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts - cubed
3 cloves garlic - minced
1/3 cup dry white wine
2 tbs italian seasoning

Heat oil in a medium skillet.
Salt and pepper chicken to taste and brown thoroughly.
Add garlic.
Use wine to deglaze pan.
Add italian seasoning to taste.
Remove from heat and place in large bowl - be sure to get all juices.

1 bag frozen broccoli florets OR
1/2 lb fresh broccoli

Cook broccoli to desired tenderness in microwave or on stove top. I do about 3 minutes, then stir, then three more minutes in the microwave with a splash of water. Add broccoli to bowl with chicken.

***GLUTEN ALERT***

Start a large pot of water boiling for pasta and cook according to package directions.

Magical Alfredo Sauce

1 stick butter
1 pint whipping cream
1 cup Parmesan cheese
1 cup Romano cheese
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
***note*** You will have to adjust the cheese to your taste and texture preferences. I like my Alfredo sauce to be creamy with just a hint of grainy/gritty cheese.

Melt butter in a large, heavy sauce pan over medium heat.
Add cream and allow to heat fully.
Add cheeses A LITTLE AT A TIME, whisking until incorporated fully.
Remove from heat when all chese is melted.

If you add the cheese too fast it will make a big lump at the bottom of the pot with cream on top. You do not want this.

Drain pasta and combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Garnish with your favorite cheese and serve.

One note of warning - this is a delicious recipe, but it does not reheat very well. The butter in the sauce tends to separate if you re-heat in the microwave. A better idea might be to keep the sauce separate and re-heat on the stove for leftovers. Like the strata recipe from a few posts ago, this is very versatile. The magic really is in the Alfredo sauce. You could substitute shrimp for the chicken and really any vegetable for the broccoli. I got the basics of this recipe from my cousin, but I really think adding white wine to whatever meat you use really makes a difference. I experimented with adding the wine to the sauce, but wound up with a big glop of cheese underneath the cream. I think the wine works better with the meat and it does help deglaze the pan nicely. Experiment with the sauce and fine-tune it to your tastes. I know there's A TON of fat in there with the butter and the cream - but what the heck - it's dinner one night - it won't kill you. And if it does, at least you'll die really really well fed!!!

If anyone makes any of my recipes, please tell me how it turned out and what you added/changed to make it even better or to suit your personal tastes.

My hubby and little boy made this snowman yesterday. Too cute.

My name

So just like everyone else in the world with internet access, I've Googled my name any number of times (no, I won't tell you which ones were actually about me). I always get pages that are in Turkish or something and was worried that my name meant something crazy like scumbag or deer-hoof-licker or something equally dreadful. Well, come to find out that my names means:

tasinaya: tasina-, N.f.: thirst, craving. It is a different form of the word tanha-, N.f. Ins.Sg. = tasinaya.

I can deal with that! :) Turns out it's actually Pali (whatever that is).

Here's the link.

For those of you that don't *know* me, it also means "shawl woman" in Lakota.

Here's another fun thing. Apparently there's some sort of video game with a character named Tasina. I'm this hot too!

Strange News

Happy Pres Day!!!

Lose a tooth or a finger? Maybe you can grow a new one.

Of course they give the WOMAN the ticket. That seems incredibly unfair. But then again, people really shouldn't be doing this.

I just KNEW chocolate was good for me. I need to go get a candy bar now.

Here's a recipe just to add something different to the page. It's somewhat time consuming, but VERY good:

Italian Strata
Ingredients:
1 loaf Italian or French bread
1 1/2 lbs Italian sausage (ground bulk, or remove casings from links)
2 shallots - minced*
2-3 cloves garlic - minced*
1 1/2 cups mushrooms (I use baby portabellas) - slice or minced*
1 1/2 cups fresh baby spinach - roughly chopped*
1/3 cup dry marsala
2 cups of your favorite Italian cheese - I usually use 1 cup of parmesan and 1 cup of romano - you can also use mozzarella
6 eggs
1 2/3 cup half & half
salt & pepper to taste
*these are rough estimates, you can add as much as you like, or switch to other vegetables - onion, peppers, etc.

Directions
Thoroughly butter a 9x9 baking dish
Slice bread about 1" thick and cut into enough cubes to cover bottom of dish twice (about 8-10 slices should be enough). The bread needs to be dry, so either leave it out overnight or set oven to 225, distribute cubes evenly on a cookie sheet, and bake for about 20 minutes.
Brown sausage in a large skillet. Remove from pan and set aside in a large bowl.
In the same skillet, saute all vegetables until soft - you may need to add a little olive oil here. Remove vegetables and mix with sausage.
Pour marsala into pan to deglaze and simmer for 5 - 10 minutes.
While the wine is simmering, whisk eggs and half & half together in a large bowl. Salt and pepper to taste. Remove marsala from heat and allow to cool.
While wine is cooling, assemble the strata. In the 9x9 pan, put down one layer of bread, half the meat and vegetables and half the cheese. Follow with another layer of bread, the rest of the meat and vegetables and the rest of the cheese.
Whisk marsala into the egg mixture.
Pour egg mixture evenly over strata. Be careful and go slow or it will spill. You might have a small amount of the egg mixture left over, but try to get it all in.
Cover mixture loosely with plastic wrap and push down with your hands. Put something heavy on top such as book or package of sugar.
Refrigerate for 2 - 3 hours.
Let strata stand at room temperature for 20 minutes and set oven to 325.
Remove plastic wrap and add a thin layer of more cheese, if desired.
Bake uncovered for 50 minutes.

This is a very versatile recipe. You can use breakfast sausage and different cheeses (Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Swiss, etc), prepare the night before, and make for breakfast or brunch. You can also eliminate the meat for a vegetarian dish. Different types of dry white wines can be used as well. You can also try adding different spices - Italian mix, tarragon, whatever you like. Increasing the ingredients by about half would probably be enough to make in a 9x13 pan to serve more. I originally got the "breakfast" version of this from my mom, but switched up the ingredients for an "Italian" version. I made this for my parents last night and they loved it!!

Back To Blogland

Things I'm Glad I'm Not:

- A frequent flier, because of cracking windshields (why is this only happening to planes and not cars there too?????)
- A big peanut butter fan (we tossed ours out - did you?)
- A believer in superstition because pork is as bad as PB apparently
- Britney Spears for a whole host of reasons not even worth linking to (apparently she checked into rehab, shaved her head, and got a tattoo on her wrist - I can't believe my son used to have a poster of her on his door!)
- A resident of West Virginia or Kentucky because then I'd have to buy a portable defibrillator
- An infant, but I forget why

In better news, the blind may go bionic and Prince Harry seems to be very brave.

In ambivalent news, no more Chief Illiniwek as a mascot. I'm not really sure how I feel about that. Mostly team mascots are so far below my radar that I really don't care what they call themselves. On the other hand, no team in the world would ever be called the "Big Bad Ol' N****rs." Furthermore, when people get caught dressing up in blackface in a misguided attempt to be funny, the entire world comes crashing down and you hear of nothing else on the news. Seems to me that dressing up in redface should be just as bad. On the other hand, it's something of a compliment to some degree. Like I said - I'm ambivalent.

And finally, just for braggin' rights - I'm so proud of my littlest boy, Noah. At his pre-school they're splitting him and a few other kids away from his regular group because they're very advanced. Hard to believe of a kid who is STILL not completely potty trained (but maybe he's confused about what underclothes are for?)

Mea Culpa

Ok. I yelled at you all for not commenting. Then you commented. Then I didn't reply. Then I didn't post anything for a long time. Sorry! Bad blogger!

I haven't been reading much news lately. I've been into some good books and movies. Also, I bought this incredibly addictive game (Super Collapse 3 - buy it at your own peril - and don't make any plans). So, enough excuses. I still haven't been through the news, but I did find the most interesting article.

I know everyone is sick of Ward Churchill and it's really old news. But I stumbled on this article and it was fascinating and sickening all at the same time. And people wonder why I didn't stay in grad school. For those of you that know me well, be sure to check out the Appendix A - 12th name down the list. Here's the article:

"How Many Ward Churchills?"

Where are my comments people????

What the heck! I finally start blogging on a somewhat regular basis and no comments. Sheesh. You're a tough crowd!

Here's a fun article on smokers. My favorite line? "Clearly brain damage isn't a treatment option for people struggling to kick the habit." hahaha

This article is called: "Never give an inguana Viagra" Not all that interesting of an article, but I thought the title was fun.

Obama and Clinton are battling for Hollywood support. Gee - why not care more about what thinking, rational voters support rather than a bunch of fruits in La-la land. Oh wait, that would make sense. Can't have that. And as it turns out, Liz Taylor supports Hillary. Well good. Now I have reason 112,123,984,263,266,266,664,198 why I won't vote for her.

Windows is finally coming out with a new operating system. I'll try it out in a year or so when they have 23% of the bugs identified and 1% patched.

My older son is part of the baggy pants brigade. He's not as bad as some - they don't hang halfway down his legs - but I find it really annoying. I tried to reason with him about this, but then realized I'd have better luck explaining non-cooperative game theory to my cat. Maybe I should have him (my son, not the cat) read this article.

Doom & Debbie

Bunch of doom n' gloom news - just 'cause it's Monday!

The moon is going to disintegrate!!! (But not for a while.)

One of the few veggies I actually like and is good for me - now it's all covered in cocaine. I can't win. I bet nobody would do this with something yucky like alfalfa sprouts.

From the "Wow sometimes men really ARE pigs" files we have this story.

Actually it should be the "wow some woman are spineless idiots who will do anything for some dumb lug" files - but oh well.

And on a more serious note, Debbie Schlussel has a really interesting piece on the fact that both of the Super Bowl teams this year have black coaches. Best lines:

"Reaching parity is not something race merchants can recognize or handle. Like the Palestinians and their phony "refugee" issue, they don't ever want this to be solved. It would take away an issue that they wish to self-perpetuate, that they don't want taken off the table . . . ever."

A Great Big Long Rant

Nothing much in the news over the past couple of days.

I did watch the most interesting documentary today. It's called "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" and it's an expose of the MPAA film rating process. If you like movies and can find this at your local video store (it comes out on Tuesday) I highly recommend it.

So the MPAA is the group that decides what rating a film gets - G, PG, PG-13, R, or NC-17. The whole process is completely secret and no one even knows who the raters are. This group is not a government entity - they are part of the film industry. They would argue that they do not "censor" movies because a filmmaker does not have to accept or use a rating on their film. That's all well and good, but if a filmmaker doesn't accept a rating, or doesn't fight an NC-17 their film will get little distribution, advertising, etc. So no rating or a "bad" rating is effective censorship, if not actual.

The raters are supposed to represent the "average, ordinary parent." Only one of the nine raters has children under the age of 18. There is some evidence that the raters favor studio pictures over independent films. It is very difficult for an independent filmmaker to get any feedback on why their film received a certain rating. A filmmaker can appeal a ruling, and this process is even more shadowy. Rarely is a ruling overturned and there are always two members of the clergy involved in the appeal process.

The raters tend to give harsher ratings to movies with either explicit sex, "aberrant" sex, or even a lot of talk about sex. They do not seem to have much of a problem with gratuitous violence. This is almost the exact opposite of the film rating system in Europe.

The documentary eventually exposes the members of the MPAA who do the ratings as well as the members of the appeals board. Probably the ultimate irony is that the documentary itself received an NC-17 rating. The MPAA says it's because of the clips of other films used in the documentary. The director rejected the rating and his film is literally not rated.

I am a HUGE fan of movies and found this documentary utterly fascinating. I've often found myself puzzled by the ratings that certain films receive and why. One example off the top of my head is "The Day After Tomorrow." This is a silly film about weather - nevermind, it's not even worth going into. But anyway, it's PG-13 for "situations of extreme peril." What the heck is a situation of extreme peril? It seems to me that the little lion cub in the "Lion King" spent a lot of his time in situations of extreme peril - why isn't that one PG-13? Oh but wait - filmmakers who appeal a decision by the MPAA aren't allowed to bring up the ratings that other films get. If they try, they will be cut off by the MPAA lawyer present at the appeal hearing.

So what's the solution? No ratings, government ratings, the same system, a modified system, what? I vote for no ratings. I don't need other people to tell me what's ok for my kids to watch. What may offend one person might be perfectly acceptable to me and vice versa. It is my responsibility as a parent to keep track of what my kids are doing. I know the next argument is - "well what about all those parents that don't keep track of stuff like that for their kids????" Well for one, too bad - I can only worry about my crew. But furthermore, if there is some child out there who has such disinterested parents that that child is watching porn all day long, the kid has FAR bigger problems to face than the effect of a couple of movies.

I know I've gone on about this for way too long. But I'm just so opposed to any kind of intrusion into the decisions private citizens make for themselves or their children. I don't want ANY organization telling me or my kids what movies we can see, books we can read, groups we can associate with, etc. But if there must be a system in place, it doesn't seem to me that the MPAA is going about matters in any kind of fair or reasonable fashion.

Here are some links if you're interested.

Monkey see, monkey do....

I think they should have just hired her!! Check it out. I want one.

Late. Tired. More this weekend.

Woohoo American Idol!

What a train wreck. Don't people realize that they can't sing. I can sing "Happy Birthday" or a simple Christmas carol. But I KNOW I do not have the voice to be a singing star. I'm OK with that. I have other talents. I would NEVER try out for a show like American Idol - I'd never make the cut. How can people honestly not know that they're horrible. Or even if they don't know, don't they have friends to be honest with them???? Sad. But fun. Embarrassing. But still fun.

By the way, if you can find a clip of Hugh Laurie accepting the Best Actor Golden Globe for TV drama go watch it. That guy is hilarious. Ok, here's the link.

Here's a strange story. German obedience - sure ok. But what ever happened to good old German engineering???? Remind me never to buy a Volkswagon. Sheesh.

And just as a huge brag, here's my handsome son all dressed up for his first formal - couldn't talk him into a haircut, but I think he looks amazing anyway.

1.12.2007

....and even more news!

Here we go with things that caught my eye.

This story is just amazing. Back when I lived in St. Louis, an 11 year old boy disappeared. It was such a sad story and I was really struck by it because my son was 11 at the time. I assumed the boy was gone forever, but it appears that he has been found today. He is alive and appears physically unharmed. His family must be over the moon. All the best to them.

Are you an American Idol fan? (I am...shhhh) Well now a group wants to do a similar contest for writers. Looks kind of interesting (and way less embarrassing to admit!).

The Doomsday Clock has been moved again. I'm way ahead of that bunch - I moved mine when Pelosi was elected Speaker.

I was all prepared to start ranting about boycotting Southern Methodist University. The headline of this article reads, "SMU Faculty Members Oppose Bush Library." But if you actually read the article, you'll see that most of the people associated with SMU are in favor of the library. So instead of ranting against the university, I'll rant against the editors who OBNOXIOUSLY chose the headline they did, instead of a more truthful one which would have looked something like "SMU Happy About Bush Library." It's so pitiful and transparent how the MSM acts.

Here's a story about procrastination. The funniest thing about it is that the procrastination study that was supposed to take five years actually took ten!!! That's hilarious!

Finally, it wouldn't be Friday without a fun photo. Here's Noah after reviewing movies with my mom! ;)

Hmmmmmm

I tried to reply to the posts that Kat and Mom left earlier and it didn't work. Pretty sad when you can't work the features on your own blog. I'll try again later. Well here's a couple of equally stupid news clips, a scary one, and a hopeful one:

I can't decide if this is really cool or abysmally dumb. But mostly I wonder how the fish feel about it!!

I think that if you poke a hole in your Picasso, you don't freakin' deserve a payoff. What an idiot.

Don't give cough medicine to babies. Wish I would have known that when my boys WERE BABIES. Jeez.

Sen. Johnson improving. Wishing him all the best. (At least until he votes for something I don't like, and then I will wish him ill - but only like a cold - and no cough medicine for him either. Is this too bitchy? Is it bad to cuss on your blog? How did I get off on these topics?)

1.10.2007

Return of the mutant deer!

A couple of posts back, I challened Kat to think up a name for a herd of mutant deer. My contribution was a "freak of mutated deer." I think her responses are way better and way funnier:

Basic: a quirk of mutant deer
Culturally dated: The monstrosities formerly known as deer
Generic: a fold of refabricated fauna
Foretelling of doom: a harbinger of hinds
Overly dramatic: a horde of hair-raising harts
Strictly alliterative: a drove of deviant deer
Gross: dinner

I've not seen any amazing news stories in the last couple of days. I did see an amazing new movie out on DVD. It's called "The Illusionist" and stars Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Rufus Sewell, and Jessica Biel. Absolutely wonderful romance/mystery. Even if you wind up not being wild about the plot, the acting is superb and the cinematography is just breathtaking. You feel as if you're watching a very old movie in terms of the lighting and mood. Next time I get near Wal-Mart (which is WAY too often), I'm going to buy this one. Four stars.

Speaking of four stars. I need some sort of rating system. Stars are boring. And no, Mom, I'm not going to do the cigarette test. (My mom rates a movie she sees in the theater by how many times she leaves to go smoke - e.g. One smoke is a pretty good movie, four smokes she might as well stayed home). Maybe I'll have my hubby graphic design something up for me.

1.06.2007

So Sorry Saturday

Well since all of my readers how now officially registered complaints, I'd better dang well post something new!! But first, let me offer some (lame) explanations:

1) It was the holiday season - how much work did YOU get done?
2) I ended my old job and started a new job - busy busy!
3) My modem freaked out and died and we had to get a new one.
4) Other than people dying (Brown, Ford, Hussein) not a heck of a lot caught my eye.
5) I'm just terrible at this - which I believe I explained a few posts back
6) All of the above.

One really interesting news article did actually catch my eye a couple of days ago. Since one of my readers (MOM) complained about links with no explanation, here's a brief summary. These parents had their severely handicapped daughter's growth stunted to keep her physically small in order to make it easier for them to care for her at home. You'll have to go read this and tell me what you all think. I find myself siding with the parents. It's a difficult question, but I'd love other opinions.

This story about infant car seats really hacked me off. We have spent so much money on these things and they probably weren't any good anyway.

Here's a way to get free instruction from MIT. I can't do basic algebra, but this might be fun for someone. The article raises some interesting thoughts about the future of education.

I love my cats, but this just seems COMPLETELY INSANE!!!! (and slightly unsanitary)

Finally, here's a late picture that I should have posted on Friday.

Oh, by the way - I went to a movie today called "The Holiday." I really liked it. Good, light romantic comedy.

12.22.2006

Fun Photo Friday

This picture is from last Christmas. Merry Christmas to all!!!

A new reader!!!!

Okay, maybe not. I was all excited because I got an "anonymous" comment. Turns out it was my friend Lynn. *sigh* So the task for my three readers (I'm giggling so hard - three readers - woohoo - I've gone viral) is to get someone else reading this thing. Your mission, should you choose to accept it - no, the heck with that - THIS IS YOUR MISSION! No choice!!

By the way Kat, I still can't get that herd of mutated deer comment out of my head. So I'm thinking that we need to think of name for that. You know - like a murder of crows or gaggle of geese. My pick: a freak of mutated deer. Your turn! :)

On to the news of the day.

Pres. Bush wants to increase the military. GOOD. I know there are lots of people who hate Bush, hate Cheney, and (sorry Mom) hate Rumsfeld, but you know what? WE HAVEN'T BEEN ATTACKED AGAIN. At the end of the day, that's all that matters to me. After eight years of Clinton doing nothing - 9/11 happens. After 9/11 and the Bush administration starts kickin' butt and taking names - WE HAVEN'T BEEN ATTACKED AGAIN. Here's the article.

Here's a stupid criminal story - and maybe an argument for the legalization of drugs?

I absolutely cannot believe this article. A guy cheats on his wife and gets a huge payday???? And I thought the U.S. was bad for frivolous lawsuits. I wonder if John Edwards was on the legal team?

DVDs out today:
Lady In the Water - waste of time, stay away.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend - ditto
The Wicker Man - ditto
Little Miss Sunshine - kinda quirky and weird.
Step Up - not bad if you like dance movies - and you are a 12 year old girl.
Invincible - fantastic. Based on the story of Philadelphia Eagles Vincent Papale. I could have done without the moody/gloomy/dark atmosphere at the beginning, but it picks up. Also, it appears that Philadelphia in 1975 was entirely sepia.

Mom, you will only (maybe) like the last one - don't even bother with any of the others.

And finally this news for all the chubby people (yes, this does include me....why do you think I have only a face photo on here???!!!??). Maybe we'll all be fashion models some day. HAHAHAHAHA! *laughs her way up to the kitchen for some fattening snacks*

Funny Photo Friday (late!!)

This is not really what I meant by "help your brother with his bath."

Here's a stupid article. I hope these researchers have learned that correlation does NOT equal causality. To quote Denis Leary, "Broccoli is a side dish people. Always has been, always will be."

This kind of creeps me out. I'm not sure why.

This REALLY creeps me out. If we as a society are going to have beauty pagaents - fine. I agree that these...ahem....role models (?!?!?!) should behave in an appropriate manner. But seriously - DONALD TRUMP?!?!?!?!? as the arbiter of taste and good behavior???? While I respect Mr. Trump's business savvy and entrepreneurship, I can't really see him as the person who decides what is and is not proper behavior for a beauty queen. Granted, marrying three of them may give him more experience than most people, but still......I don't think I want a man who trades in his trophy wife and kids every few years deciding the proper behavior of others! The thought of Mr. Trump watching a parade of Miss USA contenders sashaying by seems like the world's creepiest reality show "The Apprentice-Bachelor-Meet Your New Mommy-Survivor: Trump Tower." *shudder*

A Buncha Links

Some interesting and funny things swirling on the net today.

Don't Do This!!! ... or you'll just have to un-melt them all to pay the fine.

What's in the water in Wisconsin? Yucky!!

One of the sillier things I've ever read.

This had me giggling. But it's also sadly, sadly true how many people try to be victims.

Finally, Senator Johnson (D-SD) seems to be in bad shape. While I'm not a Democrat, I do hope he's ok. I'd love to see the Republicans take back the Senate, but certainly not at the cost of someone's health. And OF COURSE the idiots on the left have already started with their nutty theories. I've never watched "The View" and if this clip is any indication, I haven't missed a damned thing.

It's raining stars

Bundle up and head outside tonight for the meteor shower!!!

Michelle Malkin has an interesting post on her site about the lack of conservative thought on college campuses. I found this article really interesting after spending ten years in the leftist loonybin that is academia.

I hate #$@(*&%!

Sorry to cuss. But the anti-smoking nazis are really getting out of control. And for alllllllll you folks who say it's just for health reasons - just wait. When the government starts legislating away your Twinkies or McDonald's or motorcycles or rollercoasters or whatever marginally unhealthy vice you have, you're not going to have a leg to stand on. These people are not going to be happy until we're all free-range alfalfa sprout eating, melted-iceberg water drinking, hydroponic crop munching, touchy-feely, Oprah-fied, inner-child fawning, wimpy, limpy hippies. Back off already. Read the depressing news here. My favorite line: "...characteristics of the theraputic state."

Some news

Click here to find out why my cat was trying to wear my bra. It just might be the explanation.

Also, I read this stupid article about mystery novels. I felt I should include it since I was extolling the virtues of Michael Connelly a few posts ago. If you are this weak willed and have so little self-esteem, a mystery/suspense novel with a a twist is the very LEAST of your problems. See a therapist then head back to the library or your local book store with confidence.

Happily Home!

Took a very long trip to Des Moines for work. Des Moines. Need I say more? I like Iowa, I like Iowans. My dad is an Iowan. But you folks have GOT to start providing more amenities for the unfortunate souls who must travel to and through your state. And put said amenities NEAR THE MAJOR ROADS!!!! After an absolutely wretched trip through Eastern Iowa a few years ago, my husband decided that the Iowa State Motto must be, "Iowa: Where Hospitality Is Somebody Else's Problem." Seriously people - put a fast food joint or a mom & pop cafe near the interstate - I know this is a stretch, but maybe think about having a public restroom at least every 30 to 60 miles. Not that South Dakota has all that much stuff, but we do have rest areas and towns - NEAR THE MAJOR ROADS. Are all you Iowans huddled off in a cornfield somewhere just waiting for the interlopers to drive away? I'm imagining this huge mecca of food, entertainment, and fun somewhere hidden in the dark hinterlands of Iowa - but it's not accessible by I-29 or I-80. Only Platinum Iowa Members can go there and eat, drink, void, and be merry.

Anyway, it was a long trip. I'm tired. But some interesting things happened with work, I had a nice dinner with my sister, and I reconnected with an old friend. Not a bad three days really. A word to the wise - Red Roof Inns do NOT have hair dryers in the rooms. This is an unhappy discovery to make at 5 am. They will provide one if you ask, but next time I'll bring my own. Off to my own bed finally!!!

My son is a big fan of The Incredibles and was really happy to get these pajamas. I think the sandals over the footy part is a nice touch.
