These really look much better if you click for the larger version.
I'm cheating a little bit with this weeks' winners. I did not take these photos, nor were they taken in the last week - though they are all fairly recent. I have written a few times about being Indian (here, here, and here) and most of my readers have seemed pretty interested. A dear cousin of mine is running for a seat on our tribal council. He took these pictures as a way to show things that need to be fixed and things that are signs of life on our reservation. I have nothing but the most deep-seated pride and admiration for him and the things he wants to accomplish. I desperately hope he wins because it is time for the people of our generation to start working to make the changes we need to make from the inside out. I hope you enjoy these pictures and forgive me for cheating. :) (Also accept my apologies for not visiting other weekly winners lately...I vow to be a better blog buddy!)
A bullet-riddled sign

A lonely court

Would you live here?

Modern American Third World

What kind of playground do your children have?

Proud to serve a country that hasn't always served us

If he wins, change will start here

Investing in the real future

Desperately needed

Very fascinating! I watched an episode of 30 Days where the host lived on an indian reservation and it was totally 3rd world-ish in the middle of the US..
The job opportunities on them are so few and far between, but the families ever so close and loving!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Things are prety grim here in Australia for our Koori people as well..
I hope he can make some changes. Thanks for the tour.
Do you live in Eagle Butte? I taught in Martin for a year. I learned so much and really got an "education" there. So much was surprising to me. I'd love to hear more from you!
I have seen Indian reservations in 1971 that looked even worse !
My paternal grandfather was 1/2 Indian. I hope your cousin is able to get the seat & make all the necessary changes you stated here. Good luck to him :)
These are good shots for important reasons, and I wish him the best.
There are a lot of Indian tribes in WI and they seem to face the same problems.
Wow. Those photos really slap you in the face and make a point. I hope he makes a difference to these people.
Wow... I hope he wins and that he can and does make a difference. Honestly, just bringing attention to the matter is a start. Sadly, I had no idea.
Who cares if you cheated... these are GREAT! I wish him the best of luck, it's an important issue that often gets overlooked.
